The Points South Point of View – Pondicherry was once the capital of the French colonies in India; in 1954 the town was handed over to the Indian government and became a union territory. The town still retains a Gallic flavour with the colonial buildings, particularly in the old French quarter. The police wear a traditional French style uniform. The restaurants offer an interesting combination of Indian and French food. The town overlooks the Bay of Bengal with a long promenade. An excellent place for shopping and culture.
